Lifeguard Training Class (American Red Cross)

There are currently NO Lifeguard Classes being held.

Please follow our Facebook page for future courses.

To register for the Lifeguard Class or Lifeguard Recertification Class, please click here!

The course taught is a Blended Learning Course, which means that some of the coursework will need to be completed at home online, while other skills will be taught in the water. New students interested in becoming a lifeguard must meet specific requirements in order to attend the lifeguard course. The requirements are listed below:

  • Minimum age of 15-years-old (proof required).
  • Swim 550 yards continuously using Front Crawl or Breast Stroke.
  • Tread water for two minutes using only the legs.
  • Starting in the shallow water, swim 20 yards using Front crawl or Breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
  • Swim five yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed five yards apart in 4-7 feet of water, resurface and swim five yards to the side of the pool, and exit the water without using a ladder

While these are the only written requirements in order to join the class, students are encouraged to have a proficient ability to swim (using the Front crawl and Breast stroke mainly), the ability to dive under water and hold their breath, and the body strength to drag a full grown adult in the water with and without the use of a rescue tube.

Students who successfully complete the prerequisite portion of the class will be provided with the following material to ensure successful completion of the course:

  • Pocket Mask
  • Lifeguard Hip Pack
  • Whistle
  • Student Lifeguard Manual

Satisfactory completion of the Lifeguard Course will result in the student receiving the following American Red Cross Certifications:

  • Waterfront Lifeguarding
  • First Aid, CPR/AED
  • Bloodborne Pathogen

Parent/Infant Swim Lessons

*THERE ARE NO CURRENT SWIM LESSONS BEING HOSTED AT THE POOL*

Future classes will be posted in this section or to our Facebook page.

A parent/guardian is required to be in the water for part of each class, acting as a co-instructor. The goal is to build confidence to ease the transition into independent lessons.

Students will be introduced to floating on their backs and front, jumping in unsupported and submerging. Toddlers enjoy exploring water activities that promote the development of arm and leg movements as well as breath control. Lessons are taught in a fun-filled environment where students learn the basic techniques of swimming and safety skills are emphasized.

Age Group: While it is difficult to place an age requirement on these type of lessons, ages generally run from 6-months-old to 4-years-old While some infants may be able to come to lessons earlier than this, based on previous experience, 6-months-old is the youngest age we will accept in the class. Some children may need these lessons past the age of 4 years old which is acceptable Each individual infant develops at a different rate which prevents us from setting an actual maximum age on the class

Classes are broken up by age range in order to keep similar ages and usually similar abilities together to ensure a safe environment for everybody to learn in (This reduced splashing from older students effecting the younger students who may not be as comfortable). The general rule of thumb is: If an infant is unable to participate in the water without a parent present or will not be able to concentrate in a setting without a parent present in the water with them, then this is the class to attend!

HCSD Pool Party Information

*THERE ARE CURRENTLY VERY LIMITED POOL PARTIES AVAILABLE DUE TO A LIFEGUARD SHORTAGE*

Pool parties are frequently held at the pool on Friday night, Saturday morning/afternoon and Sunday afternoon.

The pool will be set up to adhere to the swimmers attending the party. The diving boards will be at the discretion of the lifeguards with every effort to utilize them for a portion of the party. All other pool rules apply.

Also available is a stereo with a CD player and iPod connection.

Programs

Lap Swim: The morning lap swim is relatively routine with regular patrons. Lane lines are only utilized should they be requested. This time is for serious people working out or completing therapy. High school students wishing to swim strict laps are allowed if the pool capacity allows it.

If a problem arises with someone interfering, please politely speak to those involved. If the problem can’t be solved, please speak with the lifeguard on duty who will resolve the issue. Please notify Pool Coordinator of incident if you deem it appropriate.

The diving boards are not used during lap swims.

Open Swim: These sessions are our regular open swim sessions. Anyone is allowed to use the pool during these times under certain conditions.

All patrons 12 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult. The adult must remain in the pool area for the entire session with the child swimming.

The pool set up will allow for a least one lap lane with a maximum of two lap lanes, shallow area and diving board. Use of the diving board will depend on the crowd size and number of guards on duty.

Water Aerobics: Water Aerobics is a low-impact workout suitable for all ages that will help to increase your endurance while building strength. The program can be as challenging as you like and is also a lot of fun! Our instructor will take you through a series of techniques built to target specific areas while moving to the sound of the music pumping through the speakers.

Students of all ages are welcome! However, we ask that you take the workouts seriously and do not get in the way of others. Those who horseplay or do not participate in the workouts will be asked to leave. No swimming or diving board use is allowed at this time unless directed by the instructor.
